Strange goings on at Chester City
A rather strange and unexpected thing happened today; strange because of the way it happened, and unexpected because it even happened at all.

SURVEY REVEALS CARDIFF CITY HAS POTENTIAL TO REACH EVEN MORE FANS
CARDIFF CITY have a vast untapped reservoir of support living close to their new stadium, a major survey has revealed.

It is one of the key findings of a questionnaire in which more than 200 local people were asked by Cardiff City Supporters' Trust for their views and attitude to Cardiff City Football Club and watching football.

Football as business – fantasy or awkward fact
The self-schadenfreude of following pointless Pompey on my laptop wasn’t really working for me this lunchtime, so I was diverted by an interesting piece in the FT by Simon Kuper (1) entitled “Football abandons the fantasy that it is a business” (although it crosses my mind that the sub-editors had had a hand in this headline

Welcome to the SD Scotland newsletter.

It's still early days in the new season but the leagues are starting to take shape and the first managerial casualties have happened. Regardless of the time of year though Supporters Direct in Scotland continues to provide support and development assistance to supporters' trusts across the country.

But first off there's an online survey we would like you fill in to give us your opinions on football. Complete it and you could win a Scottish football club shirt of your choice - all for just ten minutes work!

Talking Tactics

Over the last 12 months over 80 trust directors have attended the free "Talking Tactics" sessions which cover the essential responsibilities of being a trust director. The feedback we have received is that this has led to a direct improvement in the management of those organisations.
We will shortly also be providing targeted sessions for secretaries with chairperson and treasurer events likely to follow in the new year. Keep an eye on the Events section of the SD Website for a session happening near you.

Football Against Racism in Europe
We received the following message from our colleagues at Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC).
"Thank you for the work with SRtRC that you have undertaken during the year, this has enhanced our united anti-racist message.
Our annual Fortnight of Action takes place between the 16-31 October, we would like to encourage you to participate with this essesntial period of activity. Some organisations may be entitled to access our grants scheme, others may access our free resources and anyone can purchase our resources.
For this years Fortnight of Action, we have a number of excellent new educational resources:
* Islamophobia - DVD & Education Pack - tackles racism around Islamophobia
* A Safe Place - DVD & Education Pack - updated film and Education Pack, part of a double DVD/Educationa Pack set with Islamophobia
* Show Racism the Red Card Scotland - DVD & Education Pack - tackles racism
The Fortnight of Action booklet is available as a download only, it can be accessed alongside the Resources Application Form from our website:
www.theredcardscotland.org/get-involved/foa
We hope that you join with us once again to send out a loud and clear message on a local, regional and national level that there is no place for racism in our schools, communities or any part of our society."

Football Under the Spotlight

The University of Stirling are hosting a debate on the future of Scottish Football featuring leading administrators from the SFA, SPL and SFL alongside Henry McLeish who is undertaking a review for the SFA. Completing the panel are PFA Scotland Secretary, Fraser Wishart and SD Scotland Development Manager, James Proctor.
The event starts at 6.30pm in the Macroberts Arts Centre on the University campus on Monday 28 September. Tickets are free and you can get more information on the SD website.
We hope to see quite a few trust board members there to put their questions to the panel.

AGM & Conference

Don't forget that the Supporters Direct AGM & Conference are taking place in Birmingham on Friday 16 October this year.
There's a great line-up of speakers this year with the new CEO of the Football Association in England, Ian Watmore, Alex Phillips of UEFA and Lander Unzueta from FC Barcelona, as well as the usual opportunities to discuss ideas and experiences with trust directors from across the UK. More info can be found on the SD Website in the Events Section.

The Basics
We're always happy to hear from you, so no matter how big or small the problem remember to get in touch by either phone or email as listed below.
The biggest part of our work is to help develop each supporters' trust and support the people involved. This consists of answering concerns and queries as they arise, but also in developing courses of assistance that we deliver either through the website or face-to-face in group sessions.
So far we have run several full-day director sessions and piloted specific support for trust secretaries which was a half-day session. Each of these events has a mix of three or four trusts so that experiences are shared.
If you have questions about these sessions or any of our future support plans then just get in touch.

EFST AGM 17.09.09
The EFST AGM was held at Bayview on Thursday 17th Sept. And this is a brief summary of what was reported and discussed.

Treasurer’s Report.
The main items in the accounts to 31.05.09 were

1) The All time greats evening lost £1200 but the board were aware of this before the event. The reason was a combination of players and their guests not being charged and keeping the ticket price affordable for as many fans as possible

2) The programme made a profit of £1500 due to advertising revenue supporting losses incurred on programme sales v printing costs.

3) The raffle made a profit of over £1000 with 50% going to Maggies.

4) The Trust bought another 500 shares which brings the total to 3600.

Associate Board Member’s Report
It was reported that a good working relationship was developing and that we are helping the EFFC board consider new approaches towards commercial and communication opportunities. Two significant projects are the development of the EFFC website and a collaboration with Adam Smith College to record home (and away) games.
Programme
Despite losing several advertisers from last season we have managed to maintain price and content as well as quality. Trust board members now sell the programme so between increased sales and cutting out sellers wages from last season we hope to have a profitable season.
Re-elections
Liam Anderson, Stewart Paterson and Kerriann Paterson all resigned from the board but all re-applied and were re-elected.
Membership
Membership is currently 72 and a decision was made not to collect membership fees for now but to re-launch the Trust early in the New Year.
Constitution
At present the Trust constitution states that any funds given to EFFC will be in return for shares. A proposal was made that this should be extended to allow funds to be given to EFFC without shares being given in return if guarantees are in place that the money will be used solely for football development. Because some members pay S/O’s into a “ring fenced” account to be used only for share purchase there was some disagreement both amongst members and board about how this should be implemented. It was agreed that clearly stated proposals, giving alternatives would be prepared for the next quarterly meeting and the matter would then be reconsidered.
